In this weeks Meet the Team we talk to Richard - the Managing Director and Owner of Intamarque. We ask Richard about his day to day role, what he loves most about working at Intamarque and what he enjoys doing when he isn't at work.
What is your job role at Intamarque?
I am responsible for the performance of the company in line with the company’s overall strategy.
My role includes:
- Preparing an annual business plan and monitoring progress against this plan to ensure that the company achieves its objectives as cost-effectively and efficiently as possible.
- Ensuring that the company is providing the appropriate range, quality of services and retains its competitive edge.
- Monitoring the implementation of the annual budget to ensure that budget targets are met and that fixed costs are minimised.
- Developing and maintaining an effective marketing and public relations strategy to promote the products, services and image of the company.
- Representing the company in negotiations with suppliers and other key contacts to secure for it the most effective contract terms.
- Overseeing the preparation of the annual report and accounts of the company and ensure their approval.
- Developing and directing the implementation of policies and procedures to ensure that the company complies with all health and safety and other statutory regulations.
Tell us about a typical day in your job – has this been impacted by the pandemic?
We are very fortunate to be in a business sector not affected by the pandemic. I am usually in the office by 8.00am. We are based in a fabulous location in the Cotswolds and appreciate the Head Office where we operate from on a daily basis.
Customer & Suppliers take priority, most days working with my buyers to source stock. I receive numerous inbound enquiries everyday from the buying team. Our business is evolving fast and listening to our customers is the best way to continuously enhance and develop our services.
I also regularly ask colleagues for a third-party perspective on the market. We have a trade call every day at 2.00pm which involves Sales, Buying & Marketing to discuss offers, stock and marketing plans. I place great importance on everyone in the company communicating with all departments so they know what is going on across the business. We have an amazing team with a great cultural fit and all enjoy working together.
My job is to build upon the successful product offering and establish a wider product range. I wear multiple hats everyday. While I have the support of more than 30 fantastic people, our industry is inundated with FMCG companies, so communicating our value within it and our USP quickly is important in our daily plan. Success comes from strong strategic planning combined with speedy execution. An ability to think and run at the same time is supremely valuable. Strong focused decision-making is a must and a clear ‘make it happen’ approach every day.
After that, it’s home to the family and my two spaniel dogs who are always pleased to see me! I recently purchased two electric mountain bikes for my son and I which have now covered 2,000km in the Lake District and Cotswolds.
What do you love most about your job?
The breadth and variety of responsibilities help me get out of bed every day. No two days are the same and that is very motivating. Equally the opportunity to build a successful business and being proud of a great team, our achievements to date and a great opportunity to succeed.
What’s important to you when selecting brands/products to purchase?
We select brands based on price, quality, reliability, service, customer reviews, recommendations, crowd preferences, retail floor influences, social media influence and business common sense.

When you were a child what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to work for my Fathers Business “Shakespeare Products” which was a delivered FMCG wholesale operator supplying independent convenience stores. This gave me the basic knowledge and experience in all areas of business: Warehousing, Logistics, Credit Control, Sales & Buying.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
I spend most weekends outside with my two spaniel dogs, hobby farming and mountain biking. In the summer we go to Devon and enjoy the beach and water skiing.
